August 14, 2023Gaithersburg, MD — Recently developed artificial intelligence software can determine whether firefighters may be about to experience a potentially fatal cardiac event, researchers say.
A team of researchers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the University of Rochester, and Google recently published a report that details their machine-learning model.
Using AI technology and existing electrocardiogram data for 112 firefighters, the researchers created the Heart Health Monitoring, or H2M, model.
Individual heartbeats from the EKGs were classified either as normal or abnormal, with the latter possibly indicating irregular heart rhythms. Such rhythms can prompt the heart to stop pumping blood, often because of a heart attack, and trigger sudden cardiac arrest – the leading cause of on-the-job death among firefighters.

August 14, 2023Washington — OSHA has published an infographic on working safely in the heat.
Developed in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the one-page infographic encourages workers to:
- Drink a cup of cool water every 20 minutes, even if you aren’t thirsty. For more strenuous and longer jobs, drink a beverage with electrolytes, such as a sports drink.
- Take regular rest breaks in the shade or another cool location.
- Know the signs of heat illness.
The infographic is part of OSHA’s Heat Illness Prevention campaign. The agency plans to translate it into multiple languages.

After several U.S. Department of Labor workplace safety and health investigations at the East Palestine, Ohio, site where a Norfolk Southern Corp. train derailed in February 2023, the train’s operator has entered into a settlement agreement with the department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division-International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
On Feb. 2, 2023, the train derailment caused a 49 railcar pile-up, including 11 tank cars of hazardous chemicals. The chemicals ignited and the pile-up burned for several days.

Setting the Safety Standard

July 31, 2023Companies with 100 or more employees in certain high-hazard industries must electronically submit information from their Form 300 and Form 301.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced on July 17 a final rule that will require certain employers in designated high-hazard industries to electronically submit injury and illness information – that they are already required to keep – to the department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
The final rule takes effect on Jan. 1, 2024, and now includes the following submission requirements:
- Establishments with 100 or more employees in certain high-hazard industries must electronically submit information from their Form 300-Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses, and Form 301-Injury and Illness Incident Report to OSHA once a year. These submissions are in addition to submission of Form 300A-Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses.
